Tao Te Ching Verse 3 道德经

III

If you don’t overvalue talents,

people will not be competitive.

If you don’t overvalue possessions,

people will not steal.

If you don’t display your treasures

people will not be envious.

The Sage leads by

emptying people’s minds

and filling their bellies;

By weakening their ambitions

and improving their physical strength.

He helps people get out of their minds

and empty their desire.

Those who think they know

will not dare to make a move lightly.

For those who practice non-doing,

everything will come into order.

不上贤,使民不争;

不贵难得之货,使民不为盗;

不见可欲,使民不乱。

是以圣人之治也,

虚其心,实其腹,弱其志

强其骨,恒使民无知、无欲也。

使夫知不敢、弗为而已,则无不治矣。
